Tableau

My partner and I chose Act 1 Scene 2 for our tableau and we looked at it through a Marxist perspective. This is supposedly Claudius’ first speech as king of Denmark. He acknowledges the tragic loss of his brother, his new marriage to his brother’s wife and the situation in Norway. He explains that in Norway the same thing had happened as in Denmark; the king had died and then been succeeded by his brother and not his son. Claudius is extremely happy about his newfound power and his first speech as King shows it. The king’s crown shows his level of power, as do the staff and robe. King Claudius wants everyone to know that he will be a great king.
